A Musical Tribute To Six Of The Worlds Finest Soul Singers.
Jackie Wilson was born in Detroit, June 9th. 1934, and attended the Highland Park High School, and it is reputed that at the age of 16 he won a "Golden Glove" championship, after lying about his age. This is a myth (athough other biographys say different), the truth is he did gain entery into the contest however his mother made him quit.
This may have caused him to pursue a singing career. He sang in local clubs along with Levi Stubbs before he joined the Four Tops.
Billy Ward came upon him, when at the age of 18, he was singing in Detroit's Fox Theartre, he was looking to replace the recently departed Clyde McPhatter, in his group The Dominoes.
At the age of 23, Jackie decided to leave the group to pursue a solo career, and signed to the Brunswick label. This is when Jackie career really took off, performings song co-written by Motown founder, Berry Gordy Jr, this included "Reet Petite", "To Be Loved" and "Lonely Teardrops". Over the years Jackie has recorded some of souls finest classics, many of them featured in this great compilation. In 1961 Jackie was shot and wounded by one of the women he was involved with, and as a result lost a kidney, and carried the bullet in his body for the rest of his life.
While Jackie was appearing in Dick Clarks Travelling Oldies Revue, he suffered a stroke ironically singing his signature tune, "Lonely Teardrops", over the next few years Jackie was in a coma, and on January 21st. 1984 whilst in the Burlington County Memorial Hospital, he sadly passed away.
The offical cause was pneumonia, he was buried in an unmarked grave, which was later corrected, and his now buried in Detroit.
Jackie Wilson was post-humously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987. R.I.P.

Curtis Mayfield was bon in Chicago on 3rd. June 1942, and enjoyed a childhood filled with music. He was singing by the age of 7, strongly influenced by a local gospel group, The Northern Jubille Gospel Singers, whose line-up included three of his cousins, Sam, Tommy and Charles Hawkins, also future member of The Impressions, Jerry Butler. Curtis was a self-taught guitarist who joined The alphatones, and during his spell with the group, began to develope his song-writing skills, and in 1957 Jerry Butler invited him to join The Roosters, for whom he wrote and composed their music. Six months later the group met Eddie Thomas, who renamed them The Impression and became the groups manager. The group hit the chart a year later with "For Your Precious Love" and Mayfields professional career began in earnest. In addition to occasional gigs with The Impressions he played guitar in Butlers touring band and gave Jerry his first R & B chart-topper in 1960 with..."He Wll Break Your Heart". After saving money from his work with Butler, he took The Impressions to New York to cut some demos, the result was a recording contract with ABC Records that lasted until 1968. In addition to his work with The Impressions, Curtis also wrote and produced songs for many other record labels including Okeh, VeeJay, Windy-C and his own label Mayfield. He also established himself as a hit-maker for other Chicago based acts including Major Lance, Walter Jackson, Billy Butler, Gene Chandler, The Fascination, Cubie & the Five Stairsteps and Jan Bradley to name but a few. In 1970, Curtis launched Curtom Records with distribution through the newly-formed Buddah Records, producing music for popular artists Linda clifford, The Jones Girls and Donnie Hathaway. during this time Curtis also split from The Impressions, initially planning to stay with the group for recording purposes only.Curtis passed away on 26th December 1999 in Roswell Georgia.
