Ronan O' Rahiily arrived in London from Irleand to seek his fortune, he bought The Rolling Stones their first stage equipment, and started his own Rythmn n' Blues club in Soho. Amonst his proteges were Alex Korner and Georgie Fame.Unable to find an outlet for their music, he decided to form his own radio station, on a fund raising trip to the states, he was fascinated by a photograph showing President John F. Kennedy's daughter Caroline, playing in the oval office. This was exactly the image he was looking for his station, so the name had to be Radio Caroline.
He purchased an ex-ferry Frederica, which was taken to Grenore for conversion. Studios had to be built in the upper decks, just behind the bridge, generators were fitted and linked to two 10KW radio transmitters.
The boat then completed and renamed MV Caroline, and was moured three and half miles off the coast from Frinton-On-Sea, just inside international waters, out of the juristiction of the British Goverment.
On Easter Sunday 1964, Chris Moore and the unknown actor Simon Dee announched....THIS IS RADIO CAROLINE..YOUR ALLDAY MUSIC STATION. A host of DJs were recruited, amongst these was, the young TONY BLACKBURN.
Tony hosted the popular breakfast show, playing oldies and breaking the new songs, and was problblly resonsable for giving many pop stars their first steps to stardom. So lets go back to the golden era of pirate radio and join Tony for
some great music and great memories from the 1960s.
