"The SMALL FACES were all from London's East End, and are best remembered as the difinitive Mod
group of the 60s. An exciting live act, who were also consistant hitmakers, with most of their chart
success due to the prolific songwriting team of Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane. Founded on a bed
of rythmn and blues, a kind of Booker T and The M.G.s with vocals. The Small Faces story begins in
1964, when Steve Marriott a former child actor was singing in a group called The Moments, was
serving behind an East London music store when Ronnie Lane walked in looking to buy a new bass
guitar, after discussing the merits of variuos instruments the duo released they had a lot in common,
Ronnie was in a band called The Pioneers, along with Kenny Jones , and he invited Steve to one of their gigs, this finished off as a jam session. The following day Steve Ronnie and Kenny decided to form a new band, the asked one of Steve's former band members Jimmy Winston to join them. One of Steve girlfriends suggested the name Small Faces, because they were all small in stature apart from Winston and mostly because they all had genuine faces, in other words....TOP MODS.
The bands debut was at The MOJO Club in Sheffield which was owned by Peter Stringfellow, and in June '65 they took up residency at The Cavern club near Londonds Leicester Square. The band soon gained a recording contract with Decca Records, and released their first single in Sept '65,"What'cha Gonna Do About It" which was an instant hit, reaching number 14 in the UK charts. They soon became regulars on Ready Steady Go and Thank Your Lucky Stars. As Jimmy Winston was taller than the rest of the group he seemed to hog the limelite on these show, so the band decided to replace him with Ian McLagen, who like the other three members was small in size....completing the ultimate image......The SMALL FACES.
The group went on to have 12 top 40 Hits over the next 3 years, including their only number one, "All Or Nothing". The group split in '69, Marriott joining the lead singer of THE HERD, Peter (The Face) Frampton, to form HUMBLE PIE, the others changing their name to THE FACES, and drafting in some bloke called Rod Stewert, as lead singer. The Small Faces however will still be remebered as one of Britians finest white soul groups, and a big influence on Paul Wellerand many of todays groups. Steve Marriott died in a fire at his home in Saffron Walden on 20th. Apr 1991 and Ronnie "Plonk" Lane died 4th. June 1997 after suffering for years from Multiple Sclerosis, having had success in the 70s with his group Slim Chance."
