One of Britians finest R & B outfits, The Spencer Davis Group was formed in Birmingham in the early '60s. Dominated by the vocals of the young Stevie Winwood, the group had a string of clasisc hit songs throughout the decade. Although they preferred the blues, their first single failed to chart, and the next couple only made the lower reaches of the Top 50. However the more pop sounding "Keep On Running" gave them their first No 1, and was followed up by another chart topper "Somebody Help Me". "Gimme Some Loving" just missed out on a top spot, making No2. A couple of more chart singles were released before Stevie Winwood left to form Traffic.
