Stax records started life as the Satellite label in 1959, it was founded
by a white banker,Jim Stewert. He Later went into partnership
with his sister Estelle Axton, she owned The Satellite Record
Shop, which was located in front of a theartre, this was later
turned into the Stax studio. The name Stax was formed by
the first two letters of Stewert and Axton.Stax was most
important in Black American music in the mid 60s with it's
production of southern soul music, also it had a mix of
both black and white musicians and production staff. The
very first record on Stax was "Morning After" by The Mar-
Keys (Stax112), who had previously recorded "Last Night" on
Satellite (107) in 1961.Stax records were distributed by Atlantic
